Short Contracts and Heavy Workload for Postdocs in Dublin

Research Survey

The University College Dublin (UCD) Research Staff Association has published results from a survey on postdoctoral experiences at the university, shining a light on the levels of precarity faced by postdocs.  

Key Findings

Living Costs: 24% of postdocs spend over 70% of their salary on basic living expenses, while 52% spend between 50–70%. 

Short Contracts & Heavy Workload: 13% of postdocs are on contracts shorter than 12 months, and 35% describe their workload as “heavy.” 

Gender Disparities: Only 16% of female postdocs reported being satisfied with their salaries, compared to 28% of male postdocs.
